Life's Heirarchy
There's a heck of a lot of life on this planet and, to make it all easier to study, biologists have broken living systems up into generalized heirarchical levels:
- molecules
- organelles
- cells
- tissues
- organs
- organisms
- populations
- communities
- ecosystems
- biosphere
In this web site we care mainly about the cell, the properties that are held in common among all living things, and so we will concentrate almost exclusively on the organelles level with some references to the cellular level.
Cytoplasm | Nucleolus | Ribosomes |
Nucleus | Mitochondrion | Vacuoles |
Lysosomes | Endoplasmic Reticulum | Centrioles |
Golgi Body | Microfilaments | Plastids |
Microtubules | Cell Membrane |
